Pre-operative check
What exactly does a laser preoperative refractive check include?
The preoperative procedure (a number of eye examinations and measurements performed with the help of cutting edge ophthalmic equipment) is extremely important and necessary, before the surgery day, in order to make the suitable conclusions concerning the refractive technique choice, but also for the best refractive results. What’s more, patient’s medical history is of great importance (diseases, medications, allergies etc). The final decision and choice results from an extended discussion and conversation between the candidate and the refractive surgeon.
Namely, a complete preoperative refractive check before the laser procedure includes the following:
- Refractive check: accurate measurements of the refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) and certainty of their stabilization
- Corneal topography: extensive anterior and posterior corneal surface monitoring, including keratometry
- Corneal pachymetry: precise measurement of corneal thickness, basic criterion related with the refractive technique final choice
- Pupilometry: measurement of pupil diameter (for each eye)
- Aberrometry: analytical consideration on eyes’ light management, essential criterion for treatment planning (spherical aberrations)
- Measurement of intraocular pressure
- Measurement of tear production
- Cycloplegia
- Skiascopy
- Fundoscopy
- Clinical eye examination with special slit lamp
It is worth mentioning that individuals who use contact lenses and are going to follow the preoperative process and then the excimer laser refractive procedure, it is undoubtedly helpful to remove lenses 10 days before their first visit.
