Who is considered a suitable candidate for laser refractive procedure?
Theoretically, any individual who has refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) and wants to get rid of eye spectacles or contact lenses has the option of undergoing excimer laser refractive procedure. Generally, refractive errors are stabilized at the age of 18-21, thus an important precondition for a refractive surgery candidate it to be at least 18 years old. In such cases, the preoperative check assessment is fundamental.
However, there are some contraindications such as:
- Keratoconus
- Glaucoma
- Too thin cornea (inadequate pachymetry)
- Various corneal infections
- Pregnancy (hormonal variations cause ophtalmic changes)
- Intense and continuous dry eye condition
- Diabetes
- Ocular herpes
- Collagen diseases
- AIDS
- Sjogren’s syndrome
- Neuropathy
