Presbyopia

What exactly is presbyopia?

With aging of the human body, usually after the age of 45, natural, crystalline lens of the eye loses its flexibility, with adjustment ability difficulties while focusing on near objects. This specific condition of the visual system is absolutely normal, known as presbyopia and in the ordinary way becomes stable after 55.

Presbyopia symptoms:

Presbyopia is quite similar to hyperopia. Because of the fact that the eye’s lens adaptation weakens through years, significant effects occur in near vision, but over time, in distant also. The concept of multifocality ceases to exist. Without doubt, presbyopia is not a static condition and that is the main reason why its treatment and correction is more complicated than the other common refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).

Solutions for people who develop presbyopia:

  • Special presbyopic eye spectacles (e.g. bifocal or multifocal)
  • Contact lenses (usually multifocal for near and distant vision)
  • Laser refractive procedure (Monovision technique): e.g. distant vision correction to one eye and corresponding correction for intermediate and near vision to the other. The main objective for the human brain after the laser surgical procedure, is the appropriate vision adaptation according to the requirements
  • Laser refractive procedure (Presby-LASIK technique): Using a special excimer laser nomogram for vision normalization and recovery, usually in hyperopic presbyopia cases
  • Surgical procedure for multifocal IOL implantation (multifocal intraocular lens) and replacement of eye’s natural, crystalline lens (in combination with cataract lens extraction – phacoemulsification)
